Everyone Has a Secret or Two @pekavanagh

Book One of the Friends & Lovers Series

CS front cover

A grieving heiress.
A celebrity psychologist.
A decade of friendship.

When Camille first met Jackson she was too young. Too innocent. Too traumatized.
Friendship was less than what she wanted, but all she could handle.

Ten years later and she’s a different woman. Strong, successful, brave.
At exactly the wrong moment, one bold move threatens everything.
The safe harbor of Jackson’s family.
The unconditional commitment of his friendship.
The collection of secrets she never knew existed,

Claims and confessions come hard and fast as Jackson and Camille navigate all that has never been said.
Each step they take, closer to the truth and each other, demands another layer of secrets must fall.

Collecting Secrets is a steamy standalone contemporary romance with no cliffhanger. You will meet characters who will reappear throughout the series.

From Collecting Secrets

This was not the first time Camille had looked foolish, but it might have been the first time she didn’t care. Unable to find her room key or hold back the torrent of tears, she plunked down onto the ugly hotel carpet in front of her door and sobbed, loud and hard. With nothing but the back of her hand to wipe away the tears and snot, the scene quickly escalated from tragic to gruesome.

Heartbreak was no stranger. But this particularly cruel break-up was the last straw. How dare he? She had given him everything and he claimed it wasn’t enough. He’d stood in the cold marble lobby and yelled at her. Accused her of cheating. As if…

Humiliation mingled with anger and desperation, halting any effort to pull herself together. They’d flown across the country to attend this wedding and now she’d be conspicuously dateless in a room full of happy couples. She tried to take a breath and choked on a new wave of tears.

A soft crush of footsteps stopped in front of her, but Camille had no interest in lifting her head off her knees to look.

“Hey, Cam. What’s wrong?”

She knew that voice, as well as the gentle stroke of his hand in her hair.

“Camille. You’re scaring me. What’s going on?”

His worry pierced through her pain and, with great effort, she tilted her head up to see her best friend’s face inches from hers.

His eyes flashed to fear. “Camille! What happened? Are you okay? Talk to me!”

It took so much energy to form words. “Calm down, Jack. I’m okay.”

“You don’t look okay. Did something happen with Charlie? Where is he?”

The questions were coming too fast for Camille’s throbbing, blurry head. “He dumped me.”

There, she said it. Out loud.

The line of his lips flattened and his breath growled. Rage filled his expression. “That mother fu-”

Camille shook her head, trying to regain her composure. “We flew all the way here and that bastard couldn’t even wait one more day.”

Jackson’s mouth softened. “I’m so sorry.” He rubbed his thumb across her cheek.

She looked into the warm brown eyes of her closest friend, the man who’d been like a brother for the past ten years. This was how she knew him best – kind, caring, and sweet. She didn’t care how the world saw him. She had gotten to know the real man.

“Let’s get you up and into your room.”  He slipped his long arms under hers and stood her up. She fell into his broad chest, melting into the arms that enveloped her.

“Where’s your key, love?” he whispered into the top of her head.

She mumbled into his chest. “I couldn’t find it.”

Keeping a firm grip around her with one arm, Jackson dipped down to pick her purse up off the ground. “Can I take a look?”

“Of course.” She had no secrets from him.

She winced when he had to unlock his arm from her waist to search through her purse. Of course, he knew exactly where she would have put the key: in the smallest zippered pocket. He waved it in front of the magnetic pad and the loud click confirmed his success.

As expected, the room had been cleared of all Charlie’s belongings. His compulsiveness would have prevented him from forgetting anything. Camille stepped away from Jackson to look around, hoping to find a belt, or a tie, or even a tube of shaving cream. Any excuse to contact him again. But there was nothing, not even a stray hair.

Charlie had almost snuck out without her knowing. If she hadn’t had to leave the restaurant to go to the bathroom, she would never have seen him, bags in hand, striding across the lobby.

Jackson stepped in front of her, halting her examination of the room, and began wiping her eyes and nose with a tissue.

“I’m a mess.” Only the slightest tinge of self-consciousness colored the moment. This was who they were and had always been. He pressed the tissue across her nose and she blew, like a small child.

“No, Cam. You’re just hurting.” He balled up the tissue and flicked it into the small metal bin to his right. “I know you’re upset, love. But, personally, I’m glad he’s gone. He was never good enough for you. And he reinforced his complete lack of class by doing this here. I mean, he couldn’t have ended it before flying to Chicago with you?”

Camille dropped her head, another rush of tears pressing against her eyes.

His broad palms cupped her face, tilting her up to look at him. “Hey, hey, Cam. He has no idea what an amazing woman you are. There are better things in your future. I know it.”

What To Do on the Weekend

The good news is it’s the weekend. The bad news is this is one of the last few weekends before the end of the summer.  Now I know what you’re thinking: just because summer will be over doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy plenty of weekends. That’s true. Fall weekends are great. But you gotta admit, summer weekends have a different feel. Warm weather, longer days, more sunshine, more outdoor activities. You get to see your college-aged kids who are home for summer break. Younger kids who still live at home are on summer break and are probably a little more relaxed and more fun to be around. Wait… maybe not if they’re adolescing… and not angsty pre-teens… definitely not teenagers. Okay maybe elementary school kids are laid back and enjoying a stress-free summer.
So since the weekend is upon us and the weather (in some places) is nice, what are you going to do this weekend?

Fun with friends and family

Fun for couples

You can even have fun on your own

There are a few activities I didn’t notice on the lists (Let’s face it, some things you just don’t have time or energy to do during the week.)
House cleaning
Laundry (not everything you do on the weekend is fun)
Couple going to have sexual intercourseSex (some activities are more fun than others)
Car shows – I prefer the kind with the fast, shiny imports
Air shows – I’ ve seen the Thunderbirds. Can’t wait to see the Blue Angels

And of course reading is always a good activity. No matter how you spend your weekend, make sure you enter one or both of my giveaways.

And of course there’s this coffee scene from my book, Forbidden Kisses.

The sweet aroma of caramel quieted anxious thoughts as I lifted my cup and inhaled. I couldn’t wait for the flavors in the cappuccino to mingle on my tongue. I leaned back in my chair, closed my eyes, and brought the cup to my lips.

“Layla?”Forbidden Kisses EBook

“Yes?” My head whipped in the direction of my name. The deep voice caught my attention; his eyes however, held my focus—deep-set, the color of faded blue jeans. Mesmerizing.

“I believe this is your caramel cappuccino.” He held a cup identical to the one in my hand, except his had my name on it, and the one I almost drank from read—

“I’m Ethan. You picked up the wrong cup.”

“Sorry.” I held it out to him. “I didn’t drink from it.”

“I might not have minded if you did.”

Oh, God. The dimples that appeared when he smiled caused a flutter in my chest.

With his gorgeous eyes pinned on me, he took a sip from the cup I gave him. “Thanks for keeping it hot.” He winked and sat at the table next to mine. READ MORE

1 offense.jpgHere’s a taste of Forbidden Kisses:
The music at Hamilton Lanes pumped loudly through speakers in the ceiling. Wavy locks hung around Layla’s face as she tied her shoelaces. She tucked the wayward strands behind her ear and smiled at me. “So, are you any good?” She’d caught me off guard, and for a moment, I didn’t know how to answer. That had to be an innuendo.
“At bowling?” A smile worked its way onto my face as I teased.
“What else would I be referring to?” There was no mistaking the flirting in her words.
“Could be any number of things.”
“Why don’t you fill in the blank how you see fit?” She retrieved a ball from the rack, letting her fingers graze my thigh as she slunk past me.
“Okay.” I held her gaze so she’d know I wasn’t joking. “Yes.”
“Yes?” She raised one eyebrow.
I closed her in by the ball rack. “I’m extremely good.”
“Fill in the blank as you see fit. The answer will still be ‘yes‘.”

“What do you think?” She strutted and twirled like a runway model.

“Wow, Layla! You look amazing.”

The slinky black dress was simple, but elegant. Cut just low enough in the front to allow her breasts to tease, and low enough in the back to draw my eyes to her perfect curves.

“I love it. This is the one.”

“I haven’t even tried the other one yet.”

“You can try it if you like, but this one gets my vote.” As Layla examined her reflection, I placed my hand on her ass, sliding up and down over the velvet fabric. “If you get this one, I won’t be able to keep my hands off you.”

Her luscious lips curved into a flirtatious smile. “Then maybe I will get it.” She looked at the price tag. “Or maybe not. Ethan, this dress is ridiculously expensive.”

“And you’re worth every penny.”

“I should at least give you half. Or we can go to a less expensive store.”

It was time to put my foot down. “Layla! I’m buying it. Now, go try on the other dress if you want, but we’re leaving here with one of them.”

“And when you’re done, pick out some shoes.”

She darted back to the fitting room.

“And lingerie,” I called after her. “Do you know they have panties that you can actually eat?”

While I waited for Layla to try on the second dress, the sales clerk who’d helped us earlier showed me a pearl necklace with matching earrings. “These will go with whichever dress she chooses.”

I looked over my shoulder to see if Layla was ready to model the next dress. She hadn’t come out yet, but what caught my eye caused a knot to form in the pit of my stomach. What. The. Fuck.

My heart pounded, forcing panic through my veins with every beat. I stood, paralyzed with fear, as Commander Murphy strode right toward me. Where had he come from? What was he doing here? We were several miles away from the base. I hadn’t considered the possibility of running into someone who knew us.

“Parker! How’s it going?”

I shook his outstretched hand and prayed he couldn’t detect the sweat on my palm.

“I’m good, Sir, how are you?”

“As good as can be expected. What brings you to this neck of the woods?”

“Oh. I, um… I’m picking up a gift. For a friend.” That wasn’t a lie… except Layla was much more than a friend. I tried to appear relaxed in spite of the alarming thoughts flooding my mind. Reduced pay. Reduced rank. Captain’s Mast. Dishonorable discharge. Confinement. “What about you, Sir?”

“I just received news last night that my brother passed away. We’re flying to New York in just a few hours.”

“I’m sorry for your loss, Sir. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do.” I had to calm my breathing, or he’d know something was up.

His brow furrowed. “Actually, now that you mention it, there is. I’ve been working out the details for an upcoming operation. I’d hate for my impromptu travel plans to impede the mission.” He took a step closer to me and continued in a lower voice. “You’re the only one with the security clearance to access it.”

“Say no more, Sir. I’ll take care of it.”

“Great. I really appreciate it.”

I stole a glance toward the fitting room, hoping Layla would stay put for a while. Please let the zipper get stuck. A squeaky door hinge set me on edge. Holy shit. This was it. The end of my career.
